Carlsbad-By-The-Sea Retirement Community is looking for an experienced Organist or student with the required skills to play the Allen System 675 Series organ each week at our Sunday morning service of the word. Our multi-denominational service uses the "Hymns for the Family of God" Hymnal and starts with a prelude at 10:45 am, includes 4 hymns plus the postlude and concludes at 12:00 noon. The prelude and postlude do not have to be from the hymnal and would be chosen by the organist. The duties would be to review the hymn selections, choose the prelude and postlude, play the organ during the service, and provide feedback to the Chapel Committee if requested. This person should possess the ability to play a wide range of musical styles and have an understanding of liturgical music. Must be available on Sunday mornings and for other church services throughout the year.

ORGANIST/CHORAL ACCOMPANIST

Job Description:

Organ Accompanist for our Sunday 8 AM Mass with Choir. Saturday and Sunday evenings on rotation with other musicians. Accompanist for the Children Choir once a month at one additional Sunday Service from October through May. Main accompanist for all Holy Day Services. This is a 5-10 hour per week position. Schedule is flexible for the right candidate. The salary shall be in keeping with the training and experience of the applicant and the requirements of the job.

Skills Needed:

Primary ability to play the organ while following the Choral Director to accompany the Choir, secondarily to accompany vocalists & solo instruments with the piano. Basic knowledge of the Music and Liturgy of Roman Catholic Mass is appreciated.

Instruments:

  • Rodgers 905B 3-manual Organ with PR-300s midi interface
  • Steinway Baby Grand Piano

Weekly Duties:

  • Prepare Personal music folder (List of Hymns, etc. provided by Director) for Sunday Mass including preludes, postludes, mass parts, hymns, responses, choir anthems and other service music as needed.
  • Accompany the Choir on organ for 90 minute Wednesday evening rehearsals. (2 to 3 per month) as well as, 50 minute rehearsals with Children's Choir (October to May). Rehearsals are on Wednesday Evenings.
  • Cooperate and communicate with the director of music, pastor, and other church musicians to ensure an enriching worship experience each Sunday morning.

Other Occasional Duties:

  • Prepare music for occasional extra worship services during Advent or Lent.
  • When an accompanist is needed for funerals, weddings, special services, or Holy Days, the church organist/accompanist will be given the option first to offer his/her services. If unavailable, another accompanist will be retained by the church.

 ORGANIST

Calvary Presbyterian Church

The Church Organist is responsible for playing the organ (and occasionally the piano) for Sunday worship at Calvary in order to proclaim the message of God's love in Jesus Christ. The Church Organist report to and receives guidance and direction from the Co-Pastors. The Church Organist works co-operatively with the Choir Director and other musicians in the congregation.

Calvary has a Möeller pipe organ, one of the preeminent instruments in the Inland Empire that has been expanded over the years to 2500 pipes (metal, metal alloy and wood). We are in the middle of an extensive $100,000 renovation to restore it to its original glory that will be completed by year's end.

The Church Organist is specifically responsible for the traditional Worship Service on Sunday mornings, which includes:

  1. Playing the organ for congregational hymn singing.
  2. Playing service music for the worship service.
  3. Accompanying Chancel Choir anthems as requested by the Choir Director.
  4. Rehearsing with the choir on Thursdays when requested by the Choir Director.
  5. Accompanying solos, duets, or other special music when requested.
  6. Playing for occasional special worship services, such as Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday.

The Church Organist meets weekly with Co-Pastors and Choir Director to plan for the traditional worship service, prepares and selects the service music, and contributes to staff planning for weekly worship and planning throughout the year.

ACCOUNTABILITY: Reports to the Director of Choral Worship and the Director of Worship and Arts

HOURS REQUIRED: Approximately 8-10 hours each week

EXPERIENCE NEEDED:

  • Proficiency playing manual organ and piano in both solo performance and in the accompaniment of choral groups, vocal and instrumental soloists
  • Ability to sight-read classic music and read chord symbols on a band chart
  • Ability to play a variety of musical styles

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in Thursday evening and Sunday morning choir rehearsals
  • Accompany choir and worship band in two Sunday morning services
  • Accompany children's choir rehearsals on Wednesday afternoons during school yearAccompany student choir in weekly rehearsals
