Carlsbad-By-The-Sea Retirement Community is looking for an experienced Organist or student with the required skills to play the Allen System 675 Series organ each week at our Sunday morning service of the word. Our multi denominational service uses the "Hymns for the Family of God" Hymnal and starts with a prelude at 10:45 am, includes 4 hymns plus the postlude and concludes at 12:00 noon. The prelude and postlude do not have to be from the hymnal would be chosen by the organist. The duties would be to review the hymn selection, choose the prelude and postlude, play the organ during the service and provide feedback to the Chapel Committee if requested.

We do not have a choir so this person must possess the ability to lead the liturgical music rather than accompany. Must be available on Sunday mornings and for other church services throughout the year.

General Requirements/Expectations:

  • This position is for our "traditional" worship service, only.  Gathering music, Prelude, Offertory, Responses, Anthem, Postlude
  • Expertise and knowledge of traditional organ literature.
  • Capable to accompany the choir on organ or piano (depending on style)
  • Ability to perform within chamber orchestra size ensemble
  • Ability to perform differing styles of music; traditional western sacred music, spirituals and gospel, modern compositional styles (including but not limited to highly rhythmic/syncopated)
  • Accompany childrens' choirs as needed, on Sunday morning


  • One service Sunday morning 8:30 (choir arrives at 7:50)
  • Thursday evening choir rehearsal (90 minutes)
  • two half-day choir retreats annually
  • Capable to run sectional rehearsals
  • Perform with the choir at 1-2 concerts per year.
  • Coach soloists and small ensembles ("special music" for our services)
  • 15 hours per week
  • Available for seasonal (Advent, Holy Week, etc.) services
  • "Bench" privileges for weddings, memorial services


Negotiable dependent on proficiency and professional experience (5 yrs. minimum)

PURPOSE: The church accompanist shall provide accompaniment on the piano and organ for the choral ensembles at SBPC, including the chancel choir, student choir and children's choir. The accompanist will also support the worship band in Sunday morning services.

CLASSIFICATION: 1099 contract

ACCOUNTABILITY: Reports to the Director of Choral Worship and the Director of Worship and Arts

HOURS REQUIRED: Approximately 8-10 hours each week


  • Proficiency playing manual organ and piano in both solo performance and in the accompaniment of choral groups, vocal and instrumental soloists
  • Ability to sight-read classic music and read chord symbols on a band chart
  • Ability to play a variety of musical styles


  • Participate in Thursday evening and Sunday morning choir rehearsals
  • Accompany choir and worship band in two Sunday morning services
  • Accompany children's choir rehearsals on Wednesday afternoons during school yearAccompany student choir in weekly rehearsals
  • Participate in holiday services and concerts throughout the year
