Masterwork Series: J. H. Maunder, Olivet to Calvary

​In 1931, the great French organist Marcel Dupré improvised a musical depiction of the Stations of the Cross as meditations on poems by Paul Claudel. Throughout the fourteen movements of Le Chemin de la Croix, Op 29, Dupré weaves a rich theological tapestry symbolizing religious themes of Christ's Passion (suffering, redemption, the cross, and piety to name just a few) by linking them to musical motives (four ascending notes, a descending major triad, etc.). Come for some respite in the darkened church for this meditative performance by St. James' Artist-in-Residence and concert organist, Bruce Neswick. Accompanying the organ performance will be Claudel's original French poems and visual projections of sacred art through the centuries.&nbsp;

Date:&nbsp;Saturday, May 18th, 2025Time:&nbsp;4:00pmLocation:&nbsp;St Andrews Episcopal Church, La Mesa (4816 Glen Street, La Mesa, CA)Event Description:&nbsp;Featuring&nbsp;Organist, Jonas Nordwall, an internationally renowned virtuoso organist equally skilled in both traditional classical and modern/popular schools of musical performance. He has performed in North America, Japan, Europe, and China and has made eight concert tours to Australia. Nordwall is the only organist to play a public recital on the famous concert organ in Sydney’s Town Hall that was nationally broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting Company. He has been an adjudicator and guest recitalist for the Swiss International Organ Competition in Geneva, Switzerland.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nordwall has also performed numerous programs on the Spreckels organ in San Diego’s Balboa Park as part of their International Artist Series.The Organ:&nbsp;The organ installed at St. Andrew’s was custom designed for the church and it incorporates the original 31 rank Simpson Pipe Organ that has served our church for many years. In addition to incorporating the original pipes, an Allen GX350 adds 66 Digital Stops along with Allen Organ’s APEX floating point technology which provides 65 times more resolution than existing fixed point systems. That is a lot of fancy technical stuff to say that this organ is beyond impressive. Reception to follow.
